Chaps,

Although I'm not going (boo hoo), just a titbit of info I found out about Spain.
I know you've got not one but 2 resident experts, but this was really new to me, so I just thought I'd mention it cos no-one else has.

In the UK we use GPS and intercoms without a second thought. Now, I thought all this Europe stuff meant the rules were supposed to be roughly the same…

Reading my IAM group's newsletter yesterday, there was an article that says that many European countries do not allow this.
Don't know exactly what the rules are in each country, but in some countries, GPS satnavs will be confiscated if they alert the user to speed camera locations!
Also intercoms: some countries (notably Spain) have a rule against having speakers in your helmet. So you can get done for having audio prompts from your satnav and also using intercoms - this seems to be a side-effect of "no mobile phones whilst driving", which has been misapplied. The irony is, you are allowed to read a satnav whilst riding (so long as no cameras are marked on it) but are not allowed to hear audio prompts. So it's OK to not look where you're going but not to receive directions! Maybe you need a pillion to read the satnav and shout at you instead?! Apparently some cops see this as silly and treat helmet speakers as they would a stereo in a car, (ie perfectly OK) but certain quota-hungry reveneue-conscious members of the Guardia Civil (El Ploddo) - notably in Catalonia - have been fining bikers €100 for having bluetooth or wired intercoms, or indeed any kind of audio device in their lid. The guy that wrote the article tours a lot and he has a mate in the Spanish old bill (always handy!), and this El Coppo said that he personally thinks the law is arse and would not take too much notice, but you should be aware that a minority of more zealous colleagues might give you grief over this. Last year they were doing people for not having GB stickers, so that's another one to watch out for.

I would say you're unlikely to get stopped unless you're riding in such a way as to attract attention (like doing 140 with a race can )

Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly.
